What to Expect during and after the Assessment
When we receive your referral, you can expect a call from Theresa Gray-Sorichetti. She will contact you to set up an assessment time, and collect some personal history from you. She will then confirm a date and location for us to meet and work with you.
On the day of the appointment, Theresa will be joined by Dr. Mary Morrison and Debra Moore. Mary will talk about the Psychological Services that we are offering, and will ask for your written consent to continue with the assessment. She will discuss the purpose of the assessment, confidentiality, benefits and risks of Psychological Services, privacy, record keeping and electronic communication of your information.
In order to accurately complete the intellectual assessment, Debra requires a table and two chairs in a private and quiet area. Debra will be working with you, one on one, asking questions that assess various aspects of how you think and learn. Some of the tasks require you to solve puzzles, and some of the tasks require you to answer questions. All of the tasks start out easy, but the items can become progressively harder. You are not expected to know all of the answers! As the WAIS-IV is designed for people between the ages of 16-90, some of the harder questions might be meant for older individuals. The most important requirement is that you try your best. Most people find this testing interesting, and sometimes fun! And as a bonus, we will be using two ipads to complete the testing. There will be no need for any reading or writing. The only personal preparation you need to take is to be well-rested. We can take breaks if necessary. The assessment usually takes between 1 to 2 hours.
The Vineland-3 is usually sent out ahead of time, but if you require Mary and Theresa to help you complete it, they are happy to do that with you, and this can usually be completed while Debra is doing the assessment with the client. When the report is written (usually within 2 weeks), it is then sent to the DSO office (if applicable). They have 20 business days to determine eligibility upon receiving the report. DSO will then contact you by telephone to tell you if you are eligible for their services. One month after DSO receives the report, you will receive a copy of the report through the mail. As this report contains personal information, please store it in a safe place, usually with other important documents. Upon request, we will meet with you to go over the results of the report.
